  1. Great post Brian, really resonated with this one. I’m currently going through a similar change of thinking around what defines me, (“accountant”, “triathlete” etc) but after reading this its given me a slightly different perspective. My initial approach has been to rebel against these stereotypes, e.g. getting a bright orange sporty car because “an accountant wouldn’t do that”, or cycling 100 miles in a day to show people that I’m more than just an accountant. This separates me slightly from the crowd, gives me some “identity” at work. The longer this has gone on, the more I’ve started to realize that rebelling against the stereotypes in a reactionary way has only reinforced them in my own mind. A better approach would probably be to figure out what values and principles actually make me who I am and simply live in harmony with those, not worry about the boxes, stereotypes or external opinions.

I think its a question of self worth and how you achieve it. It’s something I wish I’d had the capacity to think about 10 years ago. I’d say 95% of people I meet, including myself, are not truly comfortable or sure of who we really are, so we rely on external opinions, titles and possessions to achieve an identity and sense of security. However, the most inspirational and exciting people I ever come across are those who are truly comfortable in their own skin. They live they’re own life and choose their own path, and the result is that the majority of people envy or admire them. The trap I’ve always found myself falling into is that I’ve always tried to emulate the attitudes, activities or actions of those people in order to be more like them, and create a life like theirs. I’m starting to realize that’s not the way. I can’t be you, or Tim Ferris and still be me, and I’ll never get anything more than fleeting happiness or sense of self worth unless I’m me.

First step was writing this i think. If you look at my Facebook or twitter feeds there’s maybe five post’s a year. That comes from a fear to be me, a fear of rejection or ridicule for some unintentional mistake or insult. I’m an incredibly opinionated and chatty guy, yet I only post a thought or a picture once a quarter. It doesn’t add up.

So thanks for the forum and thanks for sharing, maybe a few months down the line you’ll can read my blog, or maybe I’m not a sharer, who knows?.

    Hope you’re well!

    1. Kyle –

First of all, I really appreciate you for sharing your experience! It’s that type of opening up that is the first step towards what you’re talking about. I understand you 100%: the people who charge me up are the people who are living lives true to themselves. They live full out and are full of life. They don’t try to be anyone, they put all of their energy into simply being the best version of themselves they can be. These types of people are interesting for all of the reasons that the people who put themselves in boxes are not. An accountant is no less interesting than a triathlete or a punk rocker, if those people are simply using those identities as a way to hide from the world.

Our whole lives are built around building up a socially acceptable identity that will create a socially acceptable form of success. Why do we do this? Because money and prestige makes everyone happy, right? Well that’s what we’re taught to believe anyways. I think that’s why men in particular get stuck in a “warrior” mindset. We love the idea of taking on an enemy and besting it. Whether it’s a massive physical challenge like a triathlon or hand-to-hand combat, it’s a struggle of proving that we are better than the challenge put in front of us. However, what is really going on is that most of us men seek out these types of challenges to put our strength and focus into because we don’t ever actually fight the real battle in our lives. We might go to an escape and evasion weekend course to pretend we are Navy SEALs, but we don’t ever escape the social constraints that we live our lives within. Thus we look for short, cathartic escapes.

When it comes to living the life that you want to live, focus is super important. If you focus your energy on triathlons, you’re distracting yourself from taking steps that will create a meaningful change in your life. Don’t get me wrong, you can learn so much about yourself by taking on a challenge like a triathlon (and I commend you for doing it), but you distract yourself by it too. You already said that you do it to differentiate yourself. Why you want to differentiate yourself is an important question to answer.

You mentioned self worth. That’s a tough concept. It’s interesting to look at the term itself, which is, often mistakenly thought of as the amount of value that you place upon yourself. Value is comparative. You cannot compare yourself to anyone else. As much as the people around you compare cars, bank accounts, and dick size, you and I both know that they do it because they are unhappy. These unhappy people think that being better than someone else will make them happy. Obviously, it doesn’t work that way, otherwise we’d see a lot more happy people in the world!

Self worth should be thought of not as value, but as worthiness. You can’t compare worthiness. YOU ARE WORTHY. You were born that way! You just need to believe it. You are worthy of respect. You are worthy of happiness. You are worthy of friendship. You are worthy of living a life you enjoy. You are worthy of love. You are worthy of being loved for the person you are – no matter what your business card or bank account says. Whether you are a triathlete, investment banker, or Formula 1 driver doesn’t change that. But no one can tell you these things or do them for you. No one can make you be worthy. It’s up to you to learn to believe what I already know is true: that you are worthy.

It’s tough to figure out what the hell is going on inside yourself and actually allow the person who you truly are to come out. It goes against everything you’ve been trained to do throughout your life. Just remember that it’s the scariest things in life that are the ones that we’re meant to pursue. It’s never easy, nor is it intended to be. Never, ever forget, that it’s always okay to ask for and accept help along your journey!

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective with us, Kyle! I really appreciate you for it and I hope that you continue to do it often!

      Stay well my brother,

      – B
